The Basics

The Black River and Western Railroad was founded in the 1960s and currently distributes supplies to industrial customers in Hunterdon and Warren counties. The Black River and Western Railroad prides itself on serving the local community by providing transportation for the products of local businesses in the area.

The railroad links the New Jersey towns of Lambertville, Ringoes, Flemington, and Three Bridges. The Black River and Western Railroad houses a steam-powered freight train and offers numerous themed train excursions throughout the year.

Things To Do

The Black River and Western Railroad Museum is located in baggage car #420, which is adjacent to Ringoes Station. Inside the museum, you’ll find various exhibits and artifacts containing the history of The Black River and Western Railroad and of railroad and transportation in Hunterdon County, as well as an operating model railroad.

At the Black River and Western Railroad Store, you can purchase souvenirs and memorabilia to commemorate your trip. The Black River and Western Railroad Store offers glassware, apparel, BRIO trains, books, and other merchandise.

Seasonal Events

If it’s a summertime excursion you’re seeking, The Black River and Western Railroad offers various summer train rides between Flemington and Ringoes, which last about 25 minutes each way. At your stop in Ringoes, you can visit the gift shop and museum car. Once autumn arrives, hop on the Pumpkin Train for a scenic ride as the leaves are changing and the air is crisp.

At Christmastime, The Black River and Western Railroad showcases its annual North Pole Express event, featuring a meet and greet with Santa, the elves, Santa’s sleigh, refreshments, and a photo booth. The Black River and Western Railroad also hosts birthday parties, which include a ride on an authentic caboose.

Plan Your Trip

Black River and Western Railroad personnel request that you review the details of your planned event before your arrival at the train station to ensure that you arrive on time. It’s recommended that you arrive at the train station 15 to 20 minutes before your scheduled departure time. The Black River and Western Railroad will not hold the train if you’re late, and you will be unable to receive a refund should you miss the train.

Safety is a top priority, and all passengers have to climb a few stairs to safely enter the train. Passengers are free to bring their own snacks and non-alcoholic drinks on the train. The train operates on schedule, rain or shine. Allow roughly 90 minutes for your train ride, including stops at the train station.
