How to Drive Safely on Ice and Snow

If you're like most drivers, you get nervous when driving on icy or snowy roads. Thankfully, there are tips you can follow to help make you a more confident and comfortable driver whenever you need to drive in winter weather. Check out these tips, and you'll be ready to hit the road safely this winter. Maintain Your Vehicle Before you go for a drive in the sleet or snow, you should make sure that your vehicle has had its maintenance done and is in good working condition. Routine maintenance will ensure that all fluids are filled to the necessary levels and that all the inner parts of the vehicle are functioning as they should. It's wise to check the tires and make sure they are properly inflated and have the appropriate tread depth. It's also important to always keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent your gas line from freezing. more Check Visibility It's imperative that you're able to effectively visualize the road and other cars at all times when driving in snowy conditions. You'll need to make sure that your wiper blades are functioning and that your windows are clean so that your view of the road is not compromised. On the exterior of your vehicle, you'll need to check your headlights' and taillights' brightness and make sure they're free of snow and ice. Slow Down When driving on snow and ice, it's best to take it easy and drive slowly. Accelerating and decelerating slowly will allow you to keep your traction on the road and prevent your vehicle from sliding. Keep in mind that it takes longer to stop on snow and ice, so allow extra time for your vehicle to fully stop at stop signs or traffic lights. Be Prepared If you're out driving in the snow, you need to be prepared in the event you do slip and slide on the road. It's important to be familiar with your vehicle and its handling so that you know what to do should you start skidding. If you do begin to slide and your front tires start slipping, just release the gas pedal, and allow the car to slow down. It's worth noting that it's important to try and remain calm if you're skidding, even though it's a scary situation. Don't Drive Of course, the safest place for you to be during a winter storm is at home. If possible, don't drive on ice or snow, but if you must, be extremely vigilant and cautious. If you have to leave home, it's best to wait until after the snowplows and road crews have cleared the roads. By utilizing these tips, you'll be more assertive and relaxed as you traverse the snow and ice. These tips will help you travel safely this winter in any adverse weather conditions. Use these tips to stay alert, calm, and focused on the road this winter, so that you can help protect yourself and other drivers. Vehicles Have Been Made More Compatible for Safer Roads

When driving a smaller vehicle like a sedan, coupe or hatchback, it’s not uncommon to feel inadequate, or even unsafe next to larger trucks, SUVs, and crossovers. However, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there is no real need for concern. They recently conducted a study to determine how often people die when in crashes with SUVs and Pickups. Researchers were happy to find that largely due to design changes in both larger and smaller vehicles, the two groups are more compatible on the road. Take a moment to check out the interview with the Chief Administrative Officer of the IIHS, Joe Nolan, to learn more details. Then of course, take a trip into Clinton Honda for a test drive in any of our car, truck or SUV models, knowing you’ll be safe no matter which model you chose!
