American Honda Motor Company released their January sales numbers last week. They reported a total of 100,497 Honda and Acura vehicles sold. This was a slight decrease from last year, largely because of the unpredictable winter weather across the country, as well as two fewer selling days than January 2015. The Honda division set a new record for January with 90,247 vehicles (50,812 cars and 39,435 trucks). The 2016 Honda Civic Sedan is largely responsible for this, along with the Accord and HR-V.

Honda seems very pleased with these numbers. “Led by incredibly strong demand for the all-new Civic, the Honda brand persevered rain, snow and two fewer selling days to post a strong first month of the year,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. “With Honda’s strong cadence of new models throughout 2016 we will continue our momentum and remain positive about 2016.”

Honda engineers Kenton Williams and Hideaki Takahashi are the latest individuals to be featured in the “What Makes a Honda is Who Makes a Honda”. This series highlights Honda employees from all different areas of the company that play an important role in helping to reflect the brand’s motto of “The Power of Dreams”.

Takahashi is originally from Japan where he spent time working on the ASIMO project before transferring to Honda R&D Americas in Raymond, Ohio in order to work on the Walking Assist Device Project. Williams studied robotics at MIT and was motivated to make this his career after seeing an ASIMO demonstration while at school. He also watched his grandmother lose much of her mobility due to a stroke which motivated him to help improve the quality of life of others through increased mobility.

These two engineers come from very different backgrounds, but came together thanks to a common desire to develop technology and assist individuals with disabilities through their work. The Walking Assist Device has been designed to help individuals with physical disabilities who are going through physical therapy. This project has been in effect since 1999 and utilizes many of the same technologies as the Honda ASIMO.

Takahashi said Williams brings a compassionate perspective and understanding to the project, which is necessary. “We have a language barrier, and we also come from different cultural backgrounds,” Takahashi said. “But of course, the common language is technology.”

Back in September, Honda made quite the statement when it debuted its two-minute spot “Paper”. This unique advertisement took viewers on a journey through the history of the Honda brand beginning from the very first bicycle created by the brand’s founder all the way up  until the innovative vehicles of today. What made this spot, even more, unique, however, was that the story was told through a series of hand-drawn illustrations created by numerous artists that all flow seamlessly together to share Honda’s journey.

Recently, “Paper” received, even more, attention for its creative approach with an award from One Show. The company presents their One Show Awards during their Automobile Advertising of the Year Awards ceremony that is held each year at the North American International Auto Show. The awards recognize companies who have had outstanding global market strategies and advertisements. For this year, “Paper” was awarded in the 2016 Broadcast Television category.

The 2016 North American Car of the Year Award has been presented to the 2016 Honda Civic, making this the second time that a Honda vehicle has received this award since it first began back in 1994. Each year, a group of 53 international automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada select the winner after an extensive evaluation of all the available models. During this evaluation they take key factors into consideration including driver satisfaction, innovation, value, design, handling, and safety performance.

For the 2016 model, the Civic has been completely redesigned from the inside out and is equipped with a Honda turbo engine, and Honda Sensing™ safety and driver-assistive technologies. This model is also the first compact car in the world to be equipped with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.

“The all-new Civic was developed and is built in North America, making this North American Car of the Year win even sweeter,” said Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager. “Civic is a cornerstone of the Honda lineup, and we’re delighted that the automotive press has recognized the new levels of styling, performance, advanced technology, safety and value that characterize the new Civic.”
