Honda has recently announced the “Green Path” approach which includes several initiatives that will help the company reach a voluntary goal to reduce its total GHG emissions by 50 percent by the year 2050. Some of the implementations and guidelines Honda plans to use to achieve this goal includes:

  • Reduce or eliminate the use of substances of concern and scarce natural resources in the design of its vehicles
  • Build and use a $210 million state-of-the-art paint facility that will significantly reduce the environmental impact of the auto-body painting process
  • Significantly reduce the CO2 intensity and water use of its manufacturing operations
  • One-megawatt rooftop solar array at its 400,000 square foot parts distribution center in Windsor Locks, Connecticut is anticipated to meet more than half of the site’s total electricity needs and offset an estimated 576 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually
  • Build vehicles that are designed to improve the recyclability of materials at the end of a product’s useful life
  • Continue to decrease CO2 emissions from the transportation of vehicles from its plants to dealers
  • Expand the involvement of U.S. Honda dealers in its “Green Dealer” program which rewards dealers who measurably reduce the environmental impact of their operations

“When one thinks about what automakers can do to help the environment, the immediate thought is about improving fuel efficiency and developing alternatives to gasoline,” said Ryan Harty, manager of Honda’s Environmental Business Development Office. “We work every day on these issues. But there’s much more automakers can do beyond fuel efficiency to reduce our environmental impact by adopting energy efficiency and renewable energy throughout our operations.”

introduced, the brand has built their identity around the idea of this phrase, using it to show not only the future innovative goals of the company, but the impressive steps throughout the brand’s history that have led to the dreamers of today.

Recently, the brand debuted a new short film called “Paper” that provides a unique look into the innovative history of the Honda Corporation. This spot shows a paper-flipping montage that is made up of thousands of hand-drawn color illustrations created by a number of different artists. As the illustrations flip through, they tell the story of the different advancements that the Honda brand has made over the course of six decades.

It starts out telling the story of how the company’s founder Soichiro Honda got his start by using a radio generator to power his wife’s bicycle and continues on through to the advancements of today which include the HondaJet, ASIMO, Indy Racing and much more.

“The goal is for the marketing itself to become a demonstration of Honda thinking and all the people that touch our wide range of products along the way,” said Tom Peyton, Assistant Vice President of Marketing for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “This commercial stands for the courage and conviction to imagine and make dreams a reality and speaks to Honda’s innovative nature and respect for personal achievement and contributions.”

On November 1, 1982, Honda opened its first auto production plant in North America in Marysville, Ohio. Now, nearly 33 years later, the brand is celebrating the production of the 30 millionth vehicle produced in North America.

“The production of 30 million automobiles in North America is the result of the support we have received from our customers and the communities that serve as a strong foundation of our operations in North America,” said Takuji Yamada, president of Honda North America, Inc. “This is an incredible achievement by Team Honda – including the tremendous dedication and teamwork of our associates, past and present, together with our suppliers, dealers and business partners – all focused on creating joy for our customers.”

When the Marysville plant first opened, Honda officially became the first Japanese automaker to start producing vehicles in the U.S.  Over the years, the brand has opened plants in East Liberty, Ohio; Lincoln, Ala.; Greensburg, Ind.; Alliston, Ontario; Canada; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico and Celaya, and Guanajuato, Mexico. Just last year alone, 97 percent of the Honda and Acura vehicles that were sold in the U.S. were produced at one of the company’s North American plants.

While Honda sales in August were steady, they still weren’t quite enough to beat last August. Sales were down almost 7% but many vehicles met or exceeded expectations. For example, the  combined sales of the Accord, Civic and CR-V easily surpassed the 100,000, total truck sales were up 6.9% and the CR-V broke its all-time monthly sales record.

“The shorter sales month versus last year obscures the continued strong sales momentum of core Honda models,” said Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager. “We’re working hard to keep up with the strong demand for our trucks, while our sedans continue to set the bar for retail sales.”

  • The Accord sold 40,931 units
  • The Civic sold 32,031 units
  • The CR-Z sold 333 units
  • The Fit sold 2,901 units
  • The CR-V sold 34,771 units
  • The HR-V sold 4,567 units
  • The Odyssey sold 13,423 units
  • The Pilot sold 10,202 units
